Stop #4 - Sorrento, Italy
After two days in France, we flew to Italy. Our first stop was Sorrento, a coastal city. This, similar to Portsmouth, was a less busy place relative to the big cities, however it still had a very strong cultural presence. The streets were narrow, a trademark of Italy, and the shops set up on the side of the road sold incredible food. Italy is known for its pizza and pasta, and Sorrento did not disappoint. This was the first place that we went to that felt like a vacation instead of a tourist trip. We stayed at a very nice resort with a pool and a deck on the sea. The interesting thing about Sorrento is that it was developed on a cliff, so there is very little beach area, so most of the resorts built docks off the base of the cliffs where the visitors could relax and swim in the sea. Sorrento had some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen, and it was just a place of genuine joy, everybody seemed full of life. At this point in the trip I was very tired and was wanting to return home, however Sorrento gave me a sense of rejuvenation that I needed. I would highly recommend visiting the coast of Italy if you ever get the chance, it is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever visited. I have never been in a place where everyone was happy, there was just something so captivating about the cobblestone streets and old fashioned architecture. The way everyone treated each other was so kind, we met many other families in Sorrento and had some amazing conversations with people from other countries. Moments like that are very rare and I am appreciative of this trip for allowing me to branch out and meet other people from other cultures and understand what it truly means to be a citizen of the world. How deep down there is similarity between all of us, and how this common ground is what is truly important in being healthy and strong friendships.
